Here's some inventive work from two contemporary labels that are part of a growing trend: made-to-order jewelry with non-precious materials that look a lot like expensive jewels.
Let's start with the Pasionae® label, creator of the beautiful made-to-order rings below. Here's how Pasionae describes itself: ....a label and a project inspired by the arts and philosophy that honors the concept of l’art pour l’art (art for art’s sake). Sounds like wearable art to me.
These rings are made from a unique piece of Murano glass. The glass resembles the bubbly, swirling ocean water created by waves. I love all the colors and shapes that make me keep staring.
The collection below is by Brianna Fano and is inspired by what she calls "crystal caves." Fano discovered her passion for jewelry as a student at the Parsons School of Design in New York when a Lucite fabricator asked her to build a collection using Lucite. As a result of her success with that first collection, Fano decided to become a jewelry designer.
The stylish necklaces below are made with Lucite, brass and nylon rope.
Each of these pieces is eye-catching. They're evidence that new designers with more commercially-oriented "brands" are incorporating handmade as a critical element of their collections.
So, even if these pieces aren't made the tradtional way of an artist sculpting precious stones or metals into wearable art, they're still handmade.
