I love feathers and just discovered the work of Gabrielle Gould, who specializes in jewelry made with feather embellishments. Her work often plays off the theme of birds.
Check out this Salmon Pink Feather Necklace, below, made from oxidized sterling silver and hand tied feathers. Isn't this piece lovely? The feathers remind me of flamingos.
Many of her brooches are birds, too. In her artist statement, Gould says, "My figurative bird imagery is from the southern landscape - mainly coastal Florida. Each bird pin is based upon a species common to this area. Like the feather pieces, all of the birds are made in silver, yet I often add high karat gold, feathers and even oxidation to them."
Each of the whimsical bird brooches below is made with sterling silver and feathers. In the first piece, the bird's face is so cute, and it almost looks like there's a jet stream coming out of its back.
Gould creates the metal forms by stringing them or weaving them to allow movement and then adds the feathers, a painstaking process. This second piece looks like it has different kinds of plumes.
Gould has the good fortune of being a Florida-based graphic designer who took a jewelry class on a whim and decided to turn it into a career. Her talent has taken her far, earning her spots in shows at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and in galleries across the U.S.
