The Philadelphia Museum of Art is holding its annual Craft Show this weekend (through November 15). One artist to see is Lisa Klakulak, from Asheville, NC, who creates one-of-a-kind body textiles, jewelry and accesssories out of natural fibers. Klakulak says, "Every piece is original (no duplication), made completely by myself from domestic fleece, wet felted, naturally dyed and embellished...My primary use of fiber and natural dyes represents a fight for the threatened values of community, responsibility, patience, physical activity, and an intimate relationship with our natural world." Please note: Photos may not be used or shared without permission of the artist.
Klakulak's creations are designed to be more than embellishments. Handbags serve as 'safe receptacles' and body vests resemble 'armor,' providing protection. These pieces are like mini sculptures. I love the warm and lively colors and the way that the hand stitching and beads add depth. I especially love her jewelry. If you go to Klakulak's site, Strong Felt, you can see detailed descriptions of the materials and dyes Klakulak uses to fully appreciate her artistry. What do you think?
