Whitby Jet is a rare, prehistoric black fossilized wood most commonly associated with Victorian mourning jewelry. London-based artist Jacqueline Cullen has figured out a way to embellish the natural flaws of Whitby Jet and turn it into beautiful jewelry. Cullen says, "I have developed innovative processes and formats that celebrate rather than disguise the inherent qualities of Whitby Jet allowing the natural beauty of the material to speak for itself...fractures, fissures and crevices are highlighted by an encrustation of textured fine gold, tiny crystals or glittering black diamonds." Jet comes from the coastal area surrounding Whitby in north Yorkshire, UK. I love the variety of jewelry that Cullen hand carves and decorates with delicate, shining stones. Whitby jet has an amazingly warm feel, which is surprising given its black color.
